If you remember the eighties, then you certainly remember The Goonies. This movie was a classic. On the other hand, if you still haven’t seen it for some crazy reason… Think Pirates of the Caribbean meets Stand By Me meets Indiana Jones meets The Sopranos meets… Well, it’s a whole lot of different movies all wrapped into one, really. It’s primarily an adventure flick, but it makes a lot of stops along the way, and stands as one of the all time classic kids movie downloads.

The movie follows, who else, The Goonies. This gang of misfits, led by Mikey Walsh, is known around the city of Astoria, Oregon for always getting into some sort of trouble. The story really kicks off when the rich folks in town decide to buy up the neighborhood to convert it into a golf course. The city of Astoria is really gorgeous, and it’s too bad that it only features prominently in the first act of the film before it gets into the cave-dwelling adventure stuff.

The Goonies take it upon themselves to save the Boon Docks. They start by getting into the attic, where Mike’s dad, a museum curator, has a bunch of old pirate stuff stashed. They find a treasure map leading them to an old restaurant on the coast. The restaurant is run by the Fratellis, a low rent crime family led by Ma Fratelli, a serious ball buster who takes a sort of Bates Motel approach to mothering her children, played by Robert Davi and Joe Pantoliano. They have to figure out how to get under the restaurant to get the treasure without alerting the Fratellis and…

With the pirates, the foreclosure subplot, the gangsters, the treasure, the coming of age thread, it… Sounds kind of complicated, right? Well, it really isn’t. Remember, the only reason all these other factors are there is to keep the movie moving. It’s all about adventure, and the gangsters and rich kids and all that, that’s just something for the Goonies to always be running away from as they go from booby trap to booby trap and develop deeper bonds of friendship.

Really, the movie’s all about fun. It’s a really silly, fun, exciting movie, partly because it doesn’t go all the way into fantasy territory. Unlike Monster Squad, everything that happens in The Goonies technically COULD happen in real life… It’s not very likely, but within the context of the film, it feels about as real as anything in Stand by Me. This really helps it inspire you with a sense of adventure in your every day life.

When the film came out, it was considered to be a little TOO fast paced, with booby traps and swordfights breaking out at the drop of a hat. However, when compared to the manic pace of most modern children’s films, The Goonies is downright laid back.

Anyways, it really is one of the quintessential eighties flicks. The style, the music, the genre, even, it’s all eighties, so at the very least, it’ll bring you back if you grew up in that decade.

The last Airbender is a film by M Night Shyamalan. It is based upon a famous animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. The series was created and produced by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, who served as executive producers along with Aaron Ehasz. Avatar is set in an Asian-influenced world of Chinese martial arts and elemental manipulation.

In the pantheon of directors and producers, in all the history of American cinema, very few have made contributions on the level of Roger Corman. Sure, he’s primarily known as a schlockmeister, but let’s not forget that he didn’t just direct B movies, he defined them. Schlocky B movies were his bread and butter, how he supported his production house, and he owned that genre. Additionally, he used the money he made from these monster flicks and girly shows and used it to produce some real American classics. Shame is one of them, and belongs on your queue the next time you login to your movie download service.

The film is remarkably brave, focusing on racial hatred and tension in the south. This may not sound like a big deal, and civil rights movement films have since become a genre. However, you have to consider… It’s easy to make a movie about tolerance in the 1990’s, filming on Hollywood sets designed to look like towns in Georgia and Alabama. Corman actually took his crew to a small southern town at the start of the movement. It’s not hyperbolic at all to say that he really risked his life for this movie, as he and his team received death threats.

The real star of the film is William Shatner as a villainous political agent. He’s currently working for a segregationist running for office, and he moves into this town with one purpose in mind: Stir up racially motivated violence. It’s a dark, disturbing character, and Shatner is incredible in the role. He usually plays the sort of roles that play off of his boyish charm and good looks, his uniquely friendly sense of machismo and his humor. To see this reversed in this early role is something like seeing Henry Fonda as the villain in Once Upon a Time in the West.

The idea of casting Shatner as a vile, disgusting villain may have been inspired by the charisma of Adolf Hitler: You need a charming man to sell evil ideas.

Corman and his crew were run out of town by the local police when it became clear what sort of a film they were creating, and that it could mean trouble for segregationists. The final shots were literally filmed “on the run”. As in, Corman was filming at one end of the street while a virtual lynch mob was closing in from the opposite end of the street, so Corman had to grab the shots and flee.

At this year’s Oscars, the lifetime achievement award goes to Roger Corman, and there has been remarkably little coverage of his life and his work. It’s too bad, because few filmmakers have contributed so much to the world of cinema for so little thanks.

Corman primarily made his name producing and directing schlocky monster movies, girly flicks and so on, but he also directed some real classics, and launched the careers of many cinematic legends, including Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese and Dennis Hopper. His studio taught many young actors, writers and directors the ropes, showing them how to produce a good movie on a limited budget and schedule, and he truly was one of the key figures in shaping the world of the modern American cinema.

James Cameron’s recent opus, Avatar, is considered to be the new revolution in film and cinematic technology. However, in the eyes of many fans, James Cameron may never top his action masterpiece Terminator 2. While he was placed on the map well before this with films like Aliens, it wasn’t until Terminator 2 that he was really given the freedom to create something that broke all barriers of what had come before him. It is, without a doubt, one of the all time must download movies.

Terminator 2 is always remembered as one of the most technologically innovative films ever made, but with Cameron, the special effects are only there to tell the story, not the other way around. The effects are always in service to the story, even with Avatar, which they say they’re getting ready to release in “4D” whatever the heck that means.

We’ll go ahead and quickly describe the premise: Robots take over the world, there’s a human resistance to their rule. They send a robot back to kill the human resistance leader in his teens, the adult resistance leader sends another robot back to serve as a bodyguard. That’s as complicated as it gets. It’s actually pretty straight forward from there.

The movie does take some big steps in terms of special effects. Around twenty years later, the T1000 still stands as one of the greatest CGI characters ever. Every bit as believable as newer creation like Gollum and Doctor Manhattan from The Watchmen.

The movie has a kind of purity to it in that, while the background is fairly complicated, the movie is not. The movie is driven purely on emotion and strong storytelling. You have the classic tale of the robot who becomes humanized and the heroes beating the bad guys. From there it’s all about the humanity of the characters, what they think and feel, even if there is some heady, high sci-fi stuff in there, it’s all about the people in the end.

Hopefully, you’ve seen this movie by now. In fact, it’d be sort of strange if you hadn’t. But, if you haven’t, don’t you think it’s high time you do? If you have internet under that rock where you’re living, you’ve got no excuse not to watch this movie already.

Even if you have seen it, it’s been about twenty years since it was released and now they keep pumping out all these sequels, the television series and so on, and… None of this stuff is as good as T2 was in the first place, so it may be high time for a refresher course so that everyone can try to remember that Terminator was about characters, not heady, over complicated plotlines.

It’s not just a classic as an action flick, it’s actually a classic regardless of genre. At the very least, it’s one of the best sequels ever created, and it’s never a bad time to go ahead and watch it again.

The beast ran as quickly as his newborn legs could carry him. He moved through the forest naturally, smoothly. Everything fell into place around him as if he were running through a specially molded glove, made just for him. The air itself seemed to part as his eager feat carried him forward.

All around him he could hear the sounds of nature as he listened with newborn werewolf ears. The scuttling of rodents, the scurrying of insects, the flapping of a birds wings high above.

But beyond these sounds there was another ring of noise that he could hear, just off the corner of his consciousness. The sound of people; angry people. And they were moving quickly. They were encircling him.

He could hear their cruel machines, their cars, their tanks, their motorcycles, as they sped through the forest, destroying everything in their path, and matching his preternatural bounds leap for leap.

He had only just changed a few nights before. He still wasn’t sure on his new feat. Occasionally he would miss a step, fall, but then quickly recover, pulling himself back into that same rhythm, that beat of nature which now filled his consciousness.

As the ring of human slayers closed tighter, the werewolf moved faster, bursting with energy, the easy strides now becoming fierce leaps, moving forward with every ounce of his strength.

But the humans and their cruel machines were inexorable. They kept coming, kept moving, never tripping or falling.

It was in this moment that the young wolf knew that he was lost/ He knew that not only was he lost, but his entire kind would soon be gone.

A moment of regret flooded him. He would not have much time to enjoy his new found gifts. They were getting too close now.

So he enjoyed his last moments. Breathed in the fresh forest air, tasted the deeper flavor of life, sucked the very marrow of the earth.

Then he turned, throwing himself into the line of soldiers that was threatening to close around him.

He immediately crashed into a motorcycle, leaping over the vehicle, and bringing its rider down. Two armored cars stopped, training their cannons on him, but he met the threat straight on, hiding from the one cannons fire by sliding behind the other.

Then a small group of foot soldiers caught up. They raised their weapons to fire but he was already on them, clawing and flailing wildly. That’s when the first armored car fired, missing the wolf, but sending a scattering of shrapnel flying into their own troops.

A moment passed and the wolf ran. He ran faster and faster into the woods, he ran until the sound of the humans receded behind him, and he was out, away, finally free of that evil encircling ring of mortals.

Freedom, he moved. Freedom, he breathed, sucking in the possibilities. Freedom, exhilaration, and hope.

Citizen Kane is a film that was released in 1941. Described as an American drama, it was directed by Orson Welles, who also starred in it. Even today, moguls in the movie industry consider ‘CK’ to be one the greatest films of all time. It is particularly acclaimed for its narrative technique, music, and its inventive cinematography.

Before CK was made, Welles was enjoying personal success after his stint with the Mercury Players. His contentious radio show called War of the Worlds caught Hollywood attention in 1938. One year later, RKO Pictures signed Welles on contract.

Although he was completely ‘untried’ as a film director, he was given a free hand to develop a story, pick the crew and cast, and even given ‘final cut’ privilege. After two disastrous first attempts, Welles and Herman Mankiewicz wrote the screenplay for CK.

The film was shot in 1940 and released by RKO Pictures in 1941. It was nominated in no less than 9 categories in the Academy Awards. Much to the delight of Welles and Mankiewicz, it won the award for Best Writing (Original Screenplay).

The film is a roman a clef, a story about real events and real people under the disguise of fictional characters. It looks at the life of Charles Foster Kane whose character is based on newspaper mogul, William Randolph Hearst, as well as on Welles’ life. When CK was released, Hearst was so irate that his newspapers were prohibited from even mentioning it.

Kane began his career in the publishing business because of a passion for the industry. However, over time, the passion became an obsessive desire for power. In most scenes, the foreground, background and everything in between, is in focus. Gregg Toland, the cinematographer, achieved this by experimenting with lenses and lights.

Another unique element of the movie was the achievement of certain low angle shots. In the film, one can see ceilings in the background. Like all movies at the time, the film was shot on a sound stage which does not have a ceiling. How did they do it in CK?

The Citizen Kane crew draped muslin above the set to give the illusion of a room with a ceiling. Microphones were concealed above the muslin. The crew even made trenches in the floor to facilitate low angle shots for the scene that shows Kane meeting up with Leland after the elections. The part of Charles Kane was played by Welles himself.
